Belgium 3-2 Japan

Nacer Chadli might have scored the winner as Belgium completed a miraculous turnaround to qualify to the quarter-finals but Romelu Lukaku’s dummy to release Chadli would go on to be the highlight of the game earning praise from manager Roberto Martinez.

Japan scored two quickfire goals within four minutes courtesy a cool finish from Genki Haraguchi and a rasping drive from Takashi Inui to put the Asians within touching distance of a last-8 berth. Jan Vertoghen and Marouane Fellaini levelled scoring with five minutes to give the Belgians a chance of a turnaround and it came 20 minutes later in added time as Chadli tucked home from close range.

Croatia 1-1 Denmark (a.e.t) [3-2] Penalties

Mathias Jorgensen scored in the first minute and Mario Mandzukic’s equaliser followed three minutes after but afterward the initial tempo cooled off as both teams finished level in normal time. During extra-time, Luka Modric was presented with a golden opportunity to win it for Croatia but he saw his spot-kick saved by the lively Kasper Schmeichel.

With scores still level after extra-time, the game proceeded to penalties and Ivan Rakitic held his nerve to send Croatia to the quarter-finals after Nicolai Jorgensen missed the preceeding kick.

Russia 1-1 Spain (a.e.t) [4-3] Penalties

Blerim Dzemaili wasted a golden opportunity to give Switzerland the lead and they were made to rue that miss in the 66th minute when Emil Forsberg’s mild strike at goal took a wicked deflection off Manuel Akanji wrongfooting Yann Sommer. Switzerland were unable to rebound from that deficit missing a man late on when Michael Lang was shown a red card for a late challenge on Martin Olsson.
